Understanding and treating substance use, trauma, and mental health lie in the relationships. These relationships are demonstrated through what the client shares and how the client acts. Each relationship itself may appear simple, perhaps only linking substance use and trauma, or substance use and mental health, while others include all three.
The challenge, therefore, is perhaps in the number of relationships, the entanglement of the relationships, and perhaps the relationships between the relationships.
As clinicians, we are providing treatment for the whole person. Sometimes, beginning treatment where it makes sense to the client, others where it makes sense to us clinically, and hopefully meeting the middle with the client to work with makes sense to them and presents to be clinically logical.
Working through these relationships, treating them therapeutically, is often like chasing success. Stated in the treatment plan. Treatment itself often uncovers new relationships, fragments of relationships. With potential relapses on the path to recovery.
The client is regaining strength, gaining understanding, and grieving innocence lost.
