The Danger of the Void: Why Forgetting Your Identity Makes You a Target

Posted on March 17th, 2026

In a world constantly demanding that you define yourself by your career, your relationships, or your achievements, the concept of identity in Jesus can seem abstract. Yet, according to Christian leadership and spiritual teaching, this specific identity is the most critical defense you possess.

The principle is simple, profound, and often painful: Lack of identity in Jesus makes you a target for manipulation. When you forget you’re chosen, you’ll settle for being used.

When the core of who you are is empty or uncertain, you become a void, and the world—with all its demands, toxic relationships, and false promises—will rush in to fill it.

The Vacuum of Self-Worth

The human heart is designed to know its Creator, and when it forgets its source, it searches for a substitute. When you are disconnected from your identity as a "chosen" and "loved" child of God:

  • You seek external validation: You become desperate for approval, viewing your worth as something that must be earned through performance, perfection, or pleasing others.
  • You fear rejection: The stability of your identity depends on others' opinions, making you hyper-vigilant and easily controlled by the threat of withdrawal or criticism.
  • You lack boundaries: If you don't believe you are inherently valuable, you lack the confidence to assert your limits, viewing your time and energy as commodities to be traded for acceptance.

This vacuum of self-worth is precisely what makes you vulnerable to manipulation.

Settling for Being Used vs. Standing on Being Chosen

Manipulation is a form of spiritual and emotional theft. It occurs when someone uses your need for worth to serve their own agenda.

  • Manipulation's Lie: The manipulator offers a false identity: "You are valuable if you do this for me," "You are needed if you agree with me," or "You are loved if you are silent." You settle for being used because it offers a temporary feeling of purpose or acceptance.
  • Identity's Truth: The Bible offers an unconditional truth: You are chosen, adopted, redeemed, and inherently worthy—not because of what you do, but because of whose you are. This identity is non-negotiable and cannotbe revoked.

When you internalize the fact that you are chosen, you no longer have to chase the approval of men. You recognize manipulation instantly because it attempts to reduce your infinite value to a limited transaction. You gain the authority to say "No" to demands that violate your peace and "Yes" to the higher calling placed on your life.

Your identity in Jesus is your spiritual anchor. It is the solid ground that allows you to stand firm in the face of pressure. Don't let confusion about who you are drive you into the hands of those who will use you. Reclaim your identity, and reclaim your authority.
